In this article, we aim to share some fire safety tips with you. As children, we were all given instructions to not to play with matches and lighters. We were told that there is always a risk that our clothes will catch fire. At the same time, we were also instructed to call 911 in case of emergencies. These are all some great instructions to follow. However, in the case of fire safety, these are not enough.

When it comes to fires, some basic knowledge of the do’s and don’ts can save your life and that of your loved ones. Often at times, these may be the only barrier between life and death. So consider reading through the following precautions thoroughly:

Fire safety do’s:

When it comes to fire safety, the first thing that you want to do is to ensure that all fire fighting equipment is in reach. Apart from that, you must ensure that the smoke detectors are in good working condition.

Apart from firefighting equipment and maintenance of smoke detectors, it is important to have an escape plan for the worst case scenario. In this regard, having multiple escape routes out of a building will help. However, the residents/people in the building must know how to use these routes. Hence, conduct some practice/drill sessions at least a few times every year.

Do not forget to teach children about the basic safety measures regarding lighters and matches. It has been estimated that a large number of fires (nearly 20%), break out due to casual yet careless use of lighters and matches in households.

Get all electrical malfunctions examined as soon as possible. In this regard, get help from certified electricians only, in order to remove the risk of a fire breaking out.

In case of a fire, let the firefighters know about the location of the fire and trapped people in the building beforehand. This will greatly increase the chances of the situation by going under control.

Fire safety don’ts:

Perhaps, the most important fire safety don’t is that you should never try to get rid of a fire on your own. This may result in more damage than you have expected. Make sure to call the authorities immediately, as fires tend to grow at the rate of double the area per minute.

In the case of a fire, do not re-enter the house after evacuation.

Moreover, in case the fire is too big, get yourself out of there rather than saving others. In case everyone has practiced the escape routes beforehand, they will eventually find their way out.

The most important precaution is to not to leave food that’s cooking in the kitchen unattended. Unattended food on the stove can result in a major fire breakout. This is especially true in case you are using grease or oil to cook. In the case of cooking, if a fire is about to break out, do not smack it with dishtowels. This is because smacking will cause splashing, which will result in a spread of fire.
